in the hollow

In the hollow of the earth
A world yawned and emerged
A hazy stretch of land curved
And crashed as if a wave rushed
Over my head
In the belly of our blue oceaned orb
A fruitful bursting chasm cradled
Moistened hearts of stone
As I gazed to the west and the east
The ground did not fall off into
A darkened, shadowy abyss
But rose and lifted high
Above my head
For the horizon had diminished
And the sun was ever present
So I looked up into the dusty
Clothed light, dampened
By the ever-morning’s dewy mist
Tethered by gravity and might
We spun carelessly about in a
Shining too remote
In the hollow of the earth
A pathway, through the gouged
Sockets of polar eyes
Ranging wide and quaking low
I was aimed to be swallowed deep
And far below, the gully did gulp
And thrust me forth into heart
Pumping wild with thundering
Pulse and volcanic emulsion
But low I found a deepening place
Far from the heat of the well
A sight of peaceful sanctity
Enrapturing toes, and mouths, and feet
My skin began to shed
I tore and ripped through calf
And thigh
To find a body far beneath
That glowed like coal and fire
Wrapped in featherly wings
There were still others that flew
For they learned how to
At first breath and by first sigh
I climbed the trees that grew
For miles in the cloudless sky
And perched serene over
Endless beaches of sandless sand
And lifted clear off the meadowed
Grassy land and drifted into
The warm and scented hues
Of wilderness and mire that
Spun around like spires
A kaleidoscope of prayers
Rejoicing with the leaves
As they were carried by the breeze
